IAN Youth Wilderness Trip Scholarships Committee
The Youth Wilderness Trip committee was
formed to financially assist youth ages 14-18, wishing to attend a wilderness
trip led by an IAN member. $500 is allocated annually; scholarships will
range from $50 - $500 based on the number of requests and financial need. See
below for a full list of trips offered.
Scholarship applications are due annually on April 15.

Iowa
4-H / ISU Extension Youth Wilderness Trips
If you’re 14-18 years old, in good
health, enjoy challenging yourself, and love camping and the outdoors, then one
of these wilderness trips may be your next adventure! These are unique
opportunities that combine wilderness travel, outdoor skill development,
teamwork, environmental learning, and personal growth. They are led by
trained volunteer adults, usually teachers and naturalists, who bring special
skills and knowledge to the experience. Previous camping experience is
desirable.

Wilderness Canoe Trek
Ages 14-18 July
28-August 4, 2012:
$400
Leaders: Katie Hammond and Dan Cohen
Explore the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northeast Minnesota. If you
have a bit of canoeing experience and the strength and spirit to explore, this
trip may be for you! You will paddle across wilderness lakes, portage
canoes and packs, fish for fun and food, read maps, use a compass, live in
tents without leaving a trace, cook meals in wilderness areas, and learn about
the ecology of this magnificent area. Tents, backpacks, canoes, cooking
gear, food, and transportation from the
Iowa
4-H Center are all provided.
Backpacking Trip
Ages 14-18 July 7-14, 2012:
$400
Leaders: Lowell
DeVries (another
trip leader will be added)
Backpack with us through the beautiful Porcupine Mountains in the upper
peninsula of Michigan. You’ll learn about wilderness ethics, outdoor living
skills, and natural history while exploring the miles of trails. Tents,
backpacks, cooking gear, food, and transportation from the Iowa 4-H Center are
all provided.
