The Wilderness Committee of the Iowa Association of Naturalists exists to support naturalists throughout the state who lead wilderness trips or would like to start leading wilderness trips. A “wilderness” trip is usually overnight for at least one night, and can be local or out-of-state. These trips deepen participants’ sense of place and strengthen their relationships with wildness and nature through immersive learning experiences. The committee provides mentorship, guidance, and training and recommends best practices for leading wilderness trips. The committee also oversees the distribution of wilderness scholarships on behalf of the Iowa Association of Naturalists. These scholarships are intended to reduce financial barriers for Iowans participating in wilderness trips.
